BUT BUT BUT PROPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL SWWWWWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINGS…

LOOK WHAT CASTLE MADE ME DO! I’M POSTING ON TUMBLR!!

Ahahahahaha, okay, let’s do this.

Torn really is the word of the day when it comes to this finale. Things were getting stale and all that built up we were getting with the last few episodes were not out of nowhere.

Beckett is a freaking complicated woman. That’s why we love her and that’s why she’s so frustrating at times. Like her dad said, in one of the most awesome scene of the episode, she never let her relationships run this far, go this deep. She hides. And from everything we’ve knows about her, this has been happening for a long time, not just because her mom died, but because of who she is. Knowing Castle, seeing how far he’d go for women he wasn’t even so invested in, I can understand her need to label what they have, to know exactly where they’re going, how things will be for their future, because that’s who she is, and because she’s been around a while to see how he acts when he’s “into” someone. So, in light of all of this comes this amazing job offer, that, let’s be honest, everyone and their mothers who’re in Law Enforcement must kill to have, and she’s seriously considering not taking it because of her boyfriend. Because of someone who’s been very careful about her and their relationship and she’s not even sure if they’re really all that serious… I can understand all these things.

And in Castle side, I don’t think he was really thinking all that far ahead. I do think he was just waiting for her to bolt, to find that bump in the road and take off. That’s what he’s been used to see from her. So I really do think he was just waiting for things to crash and burn and give himself a pat in the back and say “well, at least you tried”. Because he wasn’t all in. When it comes down to it, we all know how much he loves her and how much he wants to be with her, and we all know how much he’s been screwed around in the past and how he has a lot of trust issues as well, and if he was just a little bit guarded, like he wasn’t around S2 and she was with Demming and he got so hurt with it all, then maybe he could preserve the little bit of self respect he still has and just be happy.

I think that the talk he has with Martha, another awesome scene, serves him so well because he needed that. He needed the wake up call because Beckett has been waiting a greand gesture (as he’s knows for) when it comes to them and what they are and what they really mean to each other, and that never came. And I think he needed to come to terms with the fact that Beckett really is worth the trouble and pain and heartbreak and if he really wants it, he’s gonna have to go all out because the woman is so fucking amazing that the FBI wants her!

I still don’t know how I feel about the proposal itiself. I don’t think she’ll say yes, because they’re not there yet. They need to talk but they just don’t know how. They’re both so guarded and so afraid of scaring the other off that they lost their natural ability to communicate. Because at the beginning of this things they were talking… But when things started to get serious they both got scared. And it’s normal and I get it, they’re scared of losing each other.

I liked the idea that he didn’t gave her an ultimatum (Gilmore Girls flashbacks), and I really do believe he meant it. They’ll make it work, however they can. I really do believe that he wants that, he wants to be married to her and he wants to make this work. I can see his commitment now.

But Beckett still doesn’t know what “more” means to her. Castle’s been down that road before, he’s done the whole marriage thing, and I think that’s what scared him more, go down that road again and not be enough, not make it work. And Beckett needs to figure out what she wants out of this relationship as well.

We all know she won’t take the job because if she does that then there’s no more show, but man, I’ll be so disappointed in the whole things if she just quits because of Castle and the proposal. Like, seriously.

This is so eloquent and well articulated it makes me happy!!! HEEE!

Okay, let’s go.

I agree that this whole thing didn’t come out of nowhere like part of the fandom does. I guess we didn’t discuss the past eps, so, my feelings about them are that they make sense in the original order.  The only thing I would’ve changed is that I think an ep was necessary between ‘Still’ and ‘The Squab and the Quail’. Because, whereas I completely agree that it’s completely normal to kind of ‘take one for granted’ after you get to a point in a relationship where the two people have said their ILYs and they’ve been together for awhile; Kate still almost died, THEY almost died. So I think Castle wouldn’t be postponing sex for video games one week immediately after the event. I think that’s when they would be doing it like mad. While, 2 weeks later, it would’ve worn out a bit, they would’ve done all the passionate we-almost-died sex and this aspect would be more coherent. But anyway, I still am on board with the ‘we never talk about stuff’ storyline because it’s an important issue in their relationship/personalities.

I also agree with everything that you said about Beckett. I perceive Beckett in the same way you do. Although I disagree on the point where you say she’s seriously considering turning down the offer because of Castle. But I’ll get back to that later.

As for Castle, maybe you’re right because you have a very valid argument. But particularly, I don’t think he thinks Beckett is about to bolt. I mean, she has done so before and it would be reasonable for him to think she would again. But, she went through a year long process where she accepted her feelings towards him and then took an action herself. And then, they spent almost a year in a relationship where he saw her giving much more of herself than she’s done before. I think that in the scene he finds out about the interview he’s completely winded out. I don’t think he expected that from her, ya know? She gave him a drawer, she came up with the best birthday gift… so he has no idea she’s not satisfied with what they have. He looked pretty betrayed, IMO. And rightfully so.

I think he’s got his trust issues, that he’s afraid of getting hurt again, but, at the same time, he knows that Beckett is the woman he’s loved the most. So I think his waiting has a lot more to do with him knowing her and deciding to take things slow because of her, than him not being all in.

That’s why I don’t like what Martha said to him. It is true that he waited 3 years to tell her how he felt, but the part that he spent 1 year to act on it isn’t entirely true, we know it’s not as simple as that. And I most definitely don’t agree with the ‘at first sign of trouble you bolt’. He’s not bolting, he’s just pissed that his girlfriend got a job interview in another state and didn’t only not tell him, but LIED about it. It’s the lying part that upsets me the most.

And the great gesture thing, first there was already the fact that ‘be with kate’ was the number one item in his bucket list, but then, dude, he was willing to DIE with her if that bomb exploded. He was willing to leave his mother son-less and his daughter fatherless. I mean, can something be more grand than that?

Beckett is more than worth the trouble and I love her to bits. But there’s being damaged and there’s wanting the other person to always be the one compromising. She lied to him once when she pretended she didn’t hear the ILY and back then I thought that was okay because she was behaving according to her fears. But she lied to him again when he’s always been honest with her. He’s always giving himself and she’s always holding back. And again, it’s because they are who they are. But, you can’t be the same person forever. You have to start changing at some point.

I don’t know what else he can do to show her that he’s all in. And I guess that’s where he was coming from when he proposed.

I mean, look at his face when he proposes. He looks so anguished, almost like he’s going through physical pain. He just NEEDS her to know that he loves her to the point of wanting to marry her and follow her wherever she goes. He’s hanging on for dear life. And that just makes me so sad for him.

“I think that’s what scared him more, go down that road again and not be enough, not make it work.”

I completely agree about that and I think that’s part of his desperation. He’s doing the ultimate act to prove you’re in love with someone but not even that guarantees things will work.

So now is when I get to the point where I disagree about her reasons for turning down the offer. In light of everything that Castle has done for her, I think she should not go to DC because of him. Not because of the proposal but because of him. First because she doesn’t even want that job that much. I mean, I do have a crappy memory so correct me if I’m wrong but work at the FBI has never been her dream job. Give closure to the families is what is rewarding to her, she loves what she does.

I mean, the offer is mindblowing and, like you said, anyone would love to be offered that position. But then I come back to the point that she’s using it as a way to run from her feelings. When she doesn’t tell Castle about it and says to her father that the job is what she wants, she is not considering giving it up because of Rick. Had this been her ultimate dream job, something she’s been pursuing for the past 5 seasons then I would be the first to say ‘Girl, just go for it’. But it’s not. And it’s not because that it’s a great opportunity that it’s the RIGHT opportunity for her. So there’s that. And then, there’s the fact that she also needs to prove to him that she’s all in. And refusing to go proves it more than accepting the proposal, IMO. Besides, there’s the fact that even when we do something for someone, we also do it for ourselves. It’s like Joey telling Phoebe there’s no such thing as altruism. I mean, if she declines the offer, she’s choosing a future where she still gets a career she loves and she gets the guy she’s in love with. Is that so bad? Getting the job already ratifies how capable and talented she is, it already validates her good work.

I don’t see any problem on her giving it up because of a future with him, it doesn’t make her less badass or somewhat anti-feminist. Why the guy always has to be the one doing ultimate gestures of love and giving things up for the girl? It’s such a double standard.

While we have Castle doing something extreme to save their relationship, we have Beckett either choosing to go to DC or deciding not to go because the precint is her home. It feels like in both cases she’s not weighting him in at all. So that makes me upset with her. But it only makes me upset with her because she is this extremely layered character. Even upset with her actions, I still love her as much as always because she’s this complex.

After everything, I guess my perfect scenario would be her refusing the proposal, going to DC, realizing it’s not what she truly wants and getting back to New York where she would have to win him back. BU-UT it’s not gonna happen because he wouldn’t follow her around solving cases after all that. So I don’t even know what I want that would work with the show’s dynamic.

Anyway, basically, I’m on board with the storyline and think it makes sense, I love both characters and understand their actions and think they’re both acting in character. As far as the show as a whole is concerned, I think it all works. It’s Marlowe, after all. But I feel like it’s time for Beckett to chase Castle a bit.

I missed this long discussions about Castle on tumblr! *hugs*

Okay, I’m SO GLAD you mentioned that it feels like we’re missing something and that’s the problem that I have when shows get an aditional episode. “Still”, a great episode, is so fucking out of place in the midst of everything we were supposed to be feeling right about now. And this is the only complain I have about this show since the very beginning… It feels that for all of this that we just saw at the finale to make sense, we HAVE TO forget about Still.

Still was never supposed to happen.Still was supposed to be a filler and then they gave us that adorable and amazing episode, where everything we ever wanted discussed in a calm and relaxed (hah) moment to be talked about was and it was so amazing! But then after that everything sort of gets derailed and it’s just not right… Because, like you said, he was prepared to die with her that day. That’s the most amazing thing and the most awesome commitment someone could make!!

And I do think Marlowe kind of wanted was to forget about all that to make all of the other original stuff he had prepared for the finale of the season to make sense…

But I do agree with you about how Kate should be the one chasing him now, and I feel like we’re having the same conversation over and over again because this feels exactly like I felt at the end of S6 of Gilmore Girls (minus all the angst of seeing the most amazing character being so stupid and falling into bed with the biggest jerk in history). Because that’s how we all felt about Lorelai. We all loved her and we all wanted to see her happy but it was always Luke going after her and proving himself and showing her how awesome that thing between them could be that it would be a nice change of pace to see her going after him and putting herself out there so he could also see that she was all in.

And it’s exactly how we feel about this now. Because, when you stop and think about Still being thrown in the mix, Kate’s actions become petty. Why wouldn’t she trust him to be there for her even if in another job. Why lie about it?

Castle was entitled to feel angry and betrayed because that’s what she did, even if it wasn’t the intention of her actions. I’m totally with you on that. Her motives only become more justifiable and earnest when we take away everything that happened in Still.
